Abstract

687,622. Locking screws and nuts. DODGE, X. R., and BROWN, C. O. Feb. 6, 1951 [Feb. 23, 1950], No. 2891/51. Class 89 (i) [Also in Group XXIV] A locking arrangement for co-operating screw threads, such as in a nut and bolt, or screw or stud in a threaded hole, consists in providing at least one of the members with at least one thread turn of different lead and different pitch, minor or major diameter so as to effect an interference fit with the mating member. As shown a set screw has a normal threaded portion 23 for most of its length adapted for normal screw engagement with a co-operating threaded hole and a portion 24 of decreased lead and increased pitch and minor diameters 30, 28, the major diameter 31 being the same. This latter portion 24 thus has a jamming effect in its co-opetating screw threaded hole in both an axial and radial direction. Alternatively the lead of this portion 24 may be increased and the major diameter increased in addition to or instead of the pitch and minor diameters. Again the thread in the nut or hole may be modified instead of the screw or a modified locking portion may be provided on both.
