Abstract

747,910. Wood-screws; bolts. GUEST, KEEN & NETTLEFOLDS (MIDLANDS), Ltd. Aug. 11, 1954 [Aug. 15, 1953], No. 22542/53. Classes 89 (1) and 89 (2). A screw, e.g. for securing radio components in a cabinet, comprises a shank 12 having two screwthreaded portions 14, 15 of opposite hand, portion 14 having a greater overall diameter than portion 15, and the helix angles of both portions being substantially less than 45 degrees. Portion 14 is a left hand wood - screw thread for engaging cabinet wall 10, and portion 15 is a right-hand machine-screw thread and may secure component 11 by a nut 17, or engage a threaded bore in the component, where rotation of the component is possible. In another arrangement, portion 14 is a self-tapping screw-thread for engaging a hole in a metal sheet &c., and portion 15 is a wood-screw thread. Head 13 may be countersunk and slotted, as shown, or have a hexagonal or other non-circular form. The construction ensures that when the securing means 17 is tightened, the torque exerted thereby on the screw will tighten the portion 14 in member 10.
