Abstract
953,794. Binding posts. GKN SCREWS & FASTENERS Ltd. Dec. 8, 1960 [Dee. 12, 1959; April 8, 1960], Nos. 42327/59 and 2490/60. Heading H2E. [Also in Division F2] A set screw, for securing an electric wire, has an axial hole 11 extending from its tip and containing an insert of which at least portion 15 is of nylon. The insert may be a simple nylon or other synthetic resin cylinder, Fig. 2 (not shown), with a diameter greater than that of a blind hole in which it is received, but as shown the insert has a large annular flange 15 and a similar small flange 14, both of nylon and connected by a stem 13 which may be of nylon, steel or aluminium. A metal washer 16 is first placed at the screw tip and the small flange 14 is forced through the narrow hole 11 through the screw to enter a hexagonal socket 12 and regain shape to hold the insert in position. The hole 11 is wider than the stem 13 so that the insert is rotatable. The resilience of the exposed portion of the nylon insert locks the screw in position by causing its threads to be pushed against those which receive them.
