Class 44 A latch e.g. for a motor vehicle door comprises a spring loaded bolt 4 pivoted to a plate 1 and having a projecting latch portion 3 adapted, as the door closes, to engage in an oblique slot 9, Fig. 4, in a striking plate 10 and to be displaced thereby to the locking position where it is retained by a catch lever 11 pivoted to an end flange 2 at 13. The latch is urged to the unlocking position (shown dotted) by a spring 6. As the latch 3 slides up the slot 9 it displaces the lever 11 against the action of a spring 14 by engagement with a cam face 19. A safety abutment 20 is provided before the fully latched abutment. The latch bolt is freed by displacement of the lever 11 either by a push rod 21 actuated from the outside by a push button or by a remote inside handle having a link 28 connected to one arm of a bell-crank lever 33. By reverse rotation of the inside handle the end of the link 28 is positioned between the plate 1 and the upper extension of the lever 11 which cannot therefore be disengaged by the outside push button.
