Abstract

1,162,251. Latches. L. W. MENZIMER. 17 Aug., 1966 [21 April, 1966], No. 36784/66. Heading E2A. A vehicle door latch 15 comprises a base plate 24, a latching element 17 mounted on the base plate, a pawl 32 for holding the latching element in the latched position with a striker 18 on the vehicle, an operating member 40 movable from a first to a second position, a transfer member 46 connecting the operating member and the pawl for releasing the pawl when the operating member is moved to the second position, a locking member 51, serving When set to a looked position to prevent the transfer member 46 from releasing the pawl, and a cancellation member 65 independently supported on the base plate at a point remote from the latching element 17 and from the locking member 51 and serving to cause the transfer member 46 in response to movement of the latching element from the unlatched to the latched position to move the locking member to the unlocked position as the latching element 17 is moved to the latched position. As shown, the latching element 17 is pivotal into latching engagement with the striker 18 against a spring 37 and is retained in engagement with the striker by the pawl 32 which is releasable by means of the member 40 operable by an "outside" push button (not shown). Motion of the member 40 is transmitted to the pawl 32 by the transfer member 46 which is (pivoted on the member and which includes an abutment 49 which is adjacent to an abutment 50 on the pawl, such that when the member 40 is pivoted counterclockwise about the pin 34 the abutment 49 contacts the abutment 50 to turn the pawl 32 out of engagement with the element 17. When the transfer member is pivoted to the position shown in Fig. 1, motion of the member 40 is not transmitted to the pawl since the path of movement of the abutment 49 is then moved away from the abutment 50 and the latch is looked. The transfer member 46 is moved to the looking and unlocking positions by the locking member 51 through an "inside" rod 58 or by an "outside" key cylinder through a shaft 60 and a forked member 61. The cancellation member 65 is arranged so that a flange 69 thereon always abuts an edge 72 of the member 51 when the transfer member 46 is in the "locked" or "unlocked" positions and such that when the locking member 51 is in the locking position an arm 67 of the member 65 lies in the path of an abutment 74 on the element 17 as the latter turns from the unlatched to the latched position as the door is closed and snaps the member 51 to its unlocking position. Keyless locking is achieved by holding the push button depressed as the door is closed, an arm 75 of the transfer member 46 then shifting the cancellation member 65 to a position in which its arm 67 is out of the path of abutment 74.
