Night-latches and like spring locks.-A door lock has a latch bolt and a lock bolt, the lock bolt being shot only when the latch bolt is operated without using the handle, as by slamming. The handle can turn a hub 3, which causes the spring- operated arm 8 to press the latch bolt 1 to the left, for opening the door. When the handle is turned back, the latch 'bolt is pressed into the recess 21 of the door jamb by the spring 6. If the latch bolt is retracted by slamming the door, the shoulder 16 slides off the projection 15 of the arm 8, which is then pulled to the right by the spring 10, causing the shoulder 13 to press down the arm 12 on the pivoted pawl 5, releasing the end of the bell-crank lever 4, the other end of which engages the tongue 11 of the lock bolt, and allowing this lever to tilt and the lock bolt 2 to shoot home. This position is shown in Fig. 4. To rehouse the lock-bolt in the lock casing, the handle is turned to the left, when the projection 17 on the hub 3 presses down the lever 4, withdrawing the lock-bolt, and the spring 18 presses back the pawl so that its shoulder 14 re-engages the end of the lever 4, the latch bolt being shot when the handle is released, by the springs 10 and 6. The lock-bolt may be held in its locking position by using any suitable tumbler mechanism. Striking plates.-A striking-plate is used in conjunction with the lock, in which a slide 20, Fig. 2, is moved down to leave open a recess 21 for the latch bolt or is raised to leave a recess below it for the lock bolt.
