Abstract

675,222. Exhaust silencer. WRIGHT, A. Sept. 21, 1950 [Sept. 29, 1949], No. 25011/49. Class 7(ii) In an exhaust gas silencer for an internalcombustion engine comprising a cylindrical casing 1 having an inlet 3 and an outlet 4, the casing 1 enclosing a series of diffuser units, at least one of the units consisting of a conical funnel 5 converging towards the outlet 4 and nested coaxial conical members 6 diverging from one another in the direction towards the outlet 4, it is arranged that the smaller diameter end of the funnel 5 is connected to the smaller diameter end of the outermost of the nested members 6. The casing 1, which has a lining of asbestos, houses three diffuser units each having a tube 7 connecting the funnel 5 to the outermost of the nested members 6, whilst a further set of nested conical members 6 is also located at the inlet end of the silencer. The inlet and outlet are preferably of the same diameter whilst the last diffuser unit is at a distance from the outlet 4, equal to one-half the internal casing diameter. Each diffuser unit is spaced from the adjacent unit by a distance equal to one-third the inner diameter of the casing. Specification 283,258, [Class 8(ii)], is referred to.
