742,529. Exhaust-silencers. EBERSPACHER, W., and EBERSPACHER, H., [trading as EBERSPACHER, J.]. Feb. 4, 1952 [Feb. 3, 1951], No. 2959/52. Class 7(2) In a silencing system particularly for four-stroke engines and provided with two or more silencers, the exhaust manifold 2 connected to the engine 1 and including an additional chamber for heating the induction air, silencer 5 and a pipe 3 connecting that silencer to the manifold are so dimensioned as to constitute an acoustic chamber having a natural frequency which is greater, preferably at least 50 per cent, than the maximum fundamental engine frequency as calculated by the formula nZ/120 where n=the number of revolu-- tions per minute and Z=the number of cylinders. The silencer 5 which has an internal perforated member 4 and the silencer 7 may be completely or partly, filled with sound-absorptive material, and the length of the pipe 6 between the silencers may be approximately 1/4, 3/4 or 5/4 of the wavelength of the maximum. fundamental engine frequency.
