Abstract
328,250. Webb, J. F. Jan. 16, 1929. Exhaust silencers.-Exhaust gases upon leaving a silencer are mixed with air which has passed over and been heated by the silencer chamber, additional air being induced by injector action to mix with the exhaust and heated air. An inner shell 1 is surrounded bv a shell 5 secured to the inner shell by thin spacing members 6, 8, the space between the shells forming a passage for air. Exhaust gases are discharged through a pipe 4 into the inner shell which contains silencing means consisting of discs 17 with vanes 18, the vanes of alternate discs deflecting the gases in opposite directions. The discs are mounted between spacing sleeves 19 on rods 14 which are welded to a cone 20 the base of which forms an abutment for the last disc, the other ends of the rods being attached to a disc 16 fitting over the end of the inlet pipe 4. The end 21 of cone 20 discharges into a cylindrical portion 13 of a larger cone 10 the base of which is connected by bolts 12 to the shell 5. The rods 14 are secured to and pass through the cone 10 and project at 15 to form a support for a secondary air intake cone 22 secured by bolts 26 to the final mixing chamber and outlet portion 25.
