614,464. Firearms. TASSOUL, R. Oct. 10, 1939, Nos. 27627 and 27628. Convention dates, Oct. 13, 1938 and Sept. 28, 1939. [Class 92 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] Gases from fire-arms or from the exhaust of an internal-combustion engine, are silenced by passing them through a central tube surrounded by a series of annular chambers formed by shells 6 with perforations 7, these chambers communicating by openings 10 with a further chamber 12 having exit openings 13, which may be successively opened by a rotor 18, driven by the gaseous currents. The perforations 7 may be inclined as shown, and baffles 11 provided on the shells 6. These baffles may consist of helical strips welded to the shells. A lining of sound-insulating material 26 may be provided. In a modification, the rotor 18 is replaced by a series of screw fans arranged on a longitudinal axis, and the casing may be surrounded by an air-jacket open at both ends, so that air is caused to flow therethrough by the motion of the vehicle carrying the silencer.
