Abstract

649,397. Vices. WILSON, J. E., and STARBUCK, E. C. Aug. 6, 1948, No. 20757. [Class 61(ii)] In a vice having one jaw provided with a pivoted clamping plate to allow work of irregular shape to be gripped, a pair of movable stops, one on each side of the pivot are fixed to the back of the clamping plate and are adapted to be moved into engagement with the base portion of the jaw to hold the pivoted plate parallel with the fixed jaw. The clamping plate 12 on the movable jaw 2 of a quick adjustment vice has attached thereto lugs 13 through which passes a pivot pin 14 upstanding from the base member 15 of the jaw. Arms 16 pivoted on the back of the plate, when swung downwardly bear against the face of the base member 15 and hold the plate parallel with the fixed jaw 1, the raising of one of the arms allowing the plate to pivot laterally in the required direction. For quick adjustment of the jaws a rack bar 4 free to tilt in a hole in the base member 15 and having pin and slot engagement therewith has ratchet teeth adapted for engagement with a tooth 6 at the base of the slot 5 in the fixed jaw 1. The jaws are clamped on the rack by turning the sleeve 8 which has screw threaded engagement with the end of the rack bar.
