Abstract
649,267. Potato harvesters. PACKMAN, P. J. Dec. 5, 1947, No. 32194. [Class 6(iii)] A machine for removing haulms from a row of root crops in the ground comprises a drum or ring 16 having a plurality of teeth 19 projecting in a forward direction whereby the haulms are plucked from the ground by a combing action, the teeth being rotated transversely across the crop row. The drum 16 is driven by gearing from rear wheels 11. A universal joint 24 is provided so that the drum rides on the ground and an adjustable spring 38 is provided to vary the pressure of the drum on the ground. Adjustable coulters 40 are used when required to cut straggling haulms from adjacent rows. The machine is tractor drawn and when not in use a leg 52 is provided for holding up the front end of the machine. In a modification the drum may be tilted with its top portion set behind the lower portion. The drum may be mounted with its axis substantially vertical, the ring of teeth projecting radially from the drum. A further modification may comprise an endless chain situated in a vertical plane, a lower stretch of the chain running transversely and horizontally over the crop row, a series of teeth being fitted on the front side of the chain. The machine may be fitted at the front of a potato harvester as disclosed in Specification 584,502.
