Abstract

647,808. Dashpots. KEARNEY, A. R., and ADAMS, Ltd., A. W. May 12, 1948, No. 13039. [Class 108(iii)] [Also in Group XXIX] A dashpot in a spring-loaded door-closer comprises a cylinder 1, Fig. 2, housing a plunger 2 and having a port 4 at its closed end communicating with the body 6 of a check valve. The body 6 is closed at one end by an adjustable head 12 having a fluted stem 13 carrying a slidable valve 15 engageable with a movable seat 8 urged by a spring 10 against a shoulder in the body to close a vent 9. On outward movement of the plunger 2, liquid is sucked in through the inlet 4a, lifts the valve 15 and then passes to the cylinder through the port 4. On inward movement of the plunger 2, the liquid is expelled from the cylinder 1 and slowly forced between the stem and the now seated valve. In the event of excessive pressure in the cylinder, both valve and seat are moved against the spring 10 to open the vent 9. The flutes in the stem 13 are radiused at their upper ends to permit adjustment of the area between the valve and stem. Specification 647,809, [Group XXV], is referred to.
