Abstract

744,423. Door checks. ADAMS, Ltd., A. W. July 17, 1953, No. 19894/53. Class 65 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] In a hydraulic check device, particularly for a spring-loaded door closer, having a plunger 3 in a cylinder 1 and a check valve, the latter comprises a chamber 10, a tubular metering valve stem 17 ported at 18 to the chamber, a metering passage where a tapered portion 17a on the stem passes through an annular piston 11, whereby liquid can flow in and out of the chamber through the metering passage and through a chamber port 4 communicating with the cylinder, and a non-return ball valve 19 within the stem. As the door closes a cam abuts a roller 6 carried by the spring-loaded plunger 3 and forces oil slowly through the port 4, chamber 10 and metering passage 17a to a reservoir. Should the door close under a greater force than that of the door closing spring, the increased pressure moves the piston 11 away from a stop 12 against its spring 13 to open a relief passage 15 so that oil is released quickly to allow the door to close. On opening the door, the plunger 3 sucks oil in past the valve 19 as well as through the metering passage. Specification 647,808, [Group XXIX], is referred to.
