Abstract

641,212. Luminescent materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Jan. 19, 1945, No. 1603. [Class 39 (i)] A phosphor comprises a matrix which is a zirconate of strontium, barium or cadmium activated with 1 per cent or less of silver, copper or praseodymium. A volatile flux such as aluminium fluoride nr a non-volatile flux such as lead monoxide can be used in the preparation of the phosphor. According to one example a phosphor is prepared by dry-mixing zirconium dioxide, strontium sulphate and lead monoxide, adding bismuth nitrate in aqueous solution to form a slurry, mixing until uniform, heating to evaporate off the water, grinding the dry batch so obtained to pass a 100-mesh screen, firing at 1200-1300‹ C. until the evolution of sulphurous gas ceases, quenching suddenly in water, and finally drying and regrinding the batch to pass a 100-mesh screen. The phosphor is excited most powerfully by ultraviolet radiation of about 3000 Š to 3800Š, especially 3650 Š, although also excited in some degree by the 2537 Š resonance radiation of mercury. A layer of the phosphor may be coated on the inner surface of the enclosing jacket of a high-pressure mercury vapour lamp or on a sign or dial exposed to the radiation from such a lamp, especially for use in darkness. Specification 460,210, [Group XXIII], is referred to.
