927,111. Luminescent materials. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 17, 1961 [March 25, 1960], No. 10701/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). A luminescent material which emits radiation in the erythemal region (about 3000 Š) when excited by radiation in the short U.V. region, particularly 2537 Š for use in low-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamps, consists of strontium aluminate activated by lead. The molecular proportion of SrO to Al 2 O 3 can be between 0.3 and 0.6: 1 preferably 0.4 : 1, and the molecular percentage of PbO to Al 2 O 3 can be between 2.8 and 0.7 : 1, preferably 1.4 : 1. The material is prepared by mixing SrO or Al 2 O 3 (or compounds such as SrCO 3 and Al(OH) 3 which produce the oxides on heating) with PbO or PbF 2 , heating the mixture at a temperature of between 1100‹ C. and 1200‹ C. in an oxidising atmosphere, cooling and powdering.
