Abstract

581,951. Luminescent materials. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. May 5, 1944, No. 8582. Convention date, March 24, 1943. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] A fluorescent material consists of calcium silicate activated by small amounts of manganese and lead. Calcium carbonate and silica are mixed together in such proportions to yield approximately calcium metasilicate and about 1 per cent of manganese chloride added, together with some lead chloride. Although the amount of lead in the finished material may be less than 1 per cent because of loss in firing, as much as 40 per cent lead chloride may be used in the mixture. The materials are milled together in distilled water, dried and fired from 2 to 10 hours at about 1100‹ to 1300‹ C. This material may be mixed with magnesium tungstate to give a white light, 5 - 10 per cent giving light comparable with that from an incandescent lamp, 40 per cent being needed for daylight lighting. The material is used as a coating on the inside of a fluorescent lamp with activated coiled coil tungsten electrodes and a filling of argon at low pressure and mercury vapour.
