Abstract

634,111. Springs ; road-vehicle spring- suspensions. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and SEDDON, R. M. Feb. 25, 1948, No. 6082/47. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] A resilient device for a vehicle suspension comprises a cylindrical member 1 having at each extremity a plunger 7 adapted to be associated with a vehicle wheel, compressible and resilient means interposed between the plungers and within the cylindrical member, and means for restricting the movement transmitted by one plunger to the other, to a predetermined maximum. The resilient mass may be a helical spring or compressible fluid but is preferably a stack of rubber discs 2 each having interlocking bosses 2a and depressions 2b, the latter engaging at each end a boss 6 on the face 5 of the plunger 7. The two centremost discs engage respective dished washers 20 the movement of which is limited by an annular stop 23 secured to the member 1. Each plunger 7, which is surrounded by a flared rubber sleeve 8 intended to absorb rebound shocks, is pivotally attached to an arm 10 associated with a wheel. A sheath 13 excludes dirt. The member 1 may form a transverse chassis. member, and the arm 10 may be part of a transverse link suspension, in which case road shocks are transmitted between opposite wheels. Some of the discs 2 may be replaced by rigid discs of wood or metal, or metal plates may be inserted between adjacent discs 2.
