Abstract

231,066. Trier, V. A. July 25, 1924. Vibration-dampers. - In a vehicle shockabsorber of the kind comprising two arms having their inner ends formed as friction plates and pivoted together and one or more additional plates mounted on the pivot and adapted to be brought into operation after a predetermined relative movement between the arms, stops or projections are provided extending substantially perpendicularly from the face of one or each of the arms and also from the face of a radial extension on each additional plate, the stops on the arms and plates being adapted to co-operate so as to permit the plates to have a limited free movement. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, an arm B fixed to the spring part of a vehicle and an arm A connected at its outer end to the unsprung part have their inner ends formed as friction plates B<1>, A<1> pivoted on a bolt C. A third friction plate D is pivoted on the bolt C and friction discs E are disposed between the plates B<1>, A<1>. D. A radial projection D<1> on the plate D has inturned ends D<2> adapted to engage stops F on the arm B when the arms A, B have moved relatively a predetermined distance to bring the plate D into fric tional operation. The stops F may have rollers F<1> of rubber, fibre, &c. upon them to prevent chatter, and the stops may be adjustable, or a single stop may be provided between the inturned ends D<2>. The usual pressure spring G and nut G' are provided, a thrust bearing F<2> being disposed between the spring and nut. In a shock-absorber in which the arms are connected by universal joints to the sprung and unsprung parts of the vehicle, a radial projection on an additional friction plate carries on its face a roller movable between flange stops on one of the arms, and a plate extends from the outer side of this arm and is bent over to be interposed between the nut and spring at the other side of the shock. absorber to prevent any tendency of the nut to turn on the pivot bolt. In another construction, one arm comprises inner parallel plates Q, Q<1>, Fig. 6, and the other arm outer parallel plates P, P<1>,'the additional friction plate being disposed between the plates Q, Q<1> and fricion discs being provided between the plates. A radial projection S<1> on the additional plate has upturned edges S<2> on a tapered part to co-operate with a fibre or other roller U on a pin U<1> carried in a longitudinal slot in the plate P. By altering the position of the pin U<1> in the slot, the amount of free motion permitted to the additional plate can be varied. Alternatively, the pin U<1> may be fixed and the edges S<2> formed on a member adjustably secured to the protection S<1> The usual spring V and nut V<1> are provided on the pivot bolt R. In each construction, the stops may be fixed or adjustable. or the rollers such as F' may be interchangeable with rollers of different diameter. Buffers of other form may be used instead of rollers. When two or more additional plates are employed, each additional plate is separated from a plate carried by the arm relatively to which it is allowed a limited free movement by a plate carried by the other arm.
