Abstract

630,520. Rotary pumps and engines. WILCOX, J. S. May 19, 1947, No. 13430. Convention date, June 11, 1946: [Class 110(ii)] A pump (or engine) of the roller vane type has arc-shaped members 32 which are movable outwardly to alter the capacities of the working chambers and one or more end plates 52 movable inwardly to compensate f o r wear of parts. The casing 20 contains an end plate 29, secured in position by a ring 31, the plate 29 having an extension 30 forming a bearing for the rotor 27. The input to the pump is through a manifold 41, and passages 37, 42 and delivery through slots 43, in the cavity ring 28, and passages 38 leading to the boss 23. The members 32 are controlled by hydraulic pressure or mechanical means to vary the capacities of the working chambers. Delivery fluid through a pipe 66, may be used. Each member 32 has curved legs 51 which fit in shoulders in the ring 28. The latter has curved portions 45 of parabolic, semi-elliptical or other smooth curve that guide the rollers 36 on to arc-blocks 33, which may be of hardened material. The blocks 33 are pressed radially inwards. The members 32, Fig. 10, have notches 98 into which fit teeth on the movable end plate 52. The blocks 33 are similarly notched so that the plates 52 may be moved inwards under pressure to compensate for wear of the moving parts. Sealing rings 59, 61, 63 and 49 are provided. A hole 60 allows fluid under pressure to pass to the rear of the end plate 52. The roller ends may have recesses 35. As open to inspection the rollers may have a metal core coated with rubber or the like. or may have a centre bar with rounded ends on which fit loose caps so allowing for slight irregularities of the end plates. Fig. 16 (not shown) has vanes 71 in slots 72 the vanes being drilled to receive rollers 73 that project through the upper surface of the vanes. In further modifications a roller may have projecting pegs at the ends on which fit caps of rubber or the like material or the roller may be of hard steel or a steel alloy and made into a simple magnet. The latter may be used in conjunction with a ferrous ring 28 and a non-ferrous rotor 27. In another form the roller may have a smaller roller, an idler, within.
