Abstract
640,098. Rotary pumps or engines. MINISTER OF SUPPLY, and NICHOLSON, S. G. Oct. 16, 1947, No. 27691. [Class 110 (ii)] The pump or engine has a number of inner arcuate elements coaxially arranged with respect to the rotor and spaced apart so as to leave a gap between their ends, a stator ring movable in part or wholly positioned between the rotor periphery and the arcuate elements and a number of crossheads attached to the stator ring and slidably mounted between the gapped ends of the elements whereby the gap between the rotor and the ring is adjustable. Figs. 1, 3 show a pump or engine having outwardlysliding radial or curved vanes, or rollers, with a stator made up of two or more segments 26, 27 which are movable through cross-heads 28, 29 to vary the capacity of the working chamber or chambers. In one form diagonal gaps 25a between adjacent ends of segments 26, 27 allows inward movements of the latter. The cross-heads are moved by means of a rocking lever 50 secured to parts 49, 49a which lift one roller 45, and depress the other 44, the rollers being mounted on pins 43 which are guided in slots 47. Fluid is supplied from the working chambers to a cylinder 52 and acts on the underside of a piston 23 to balance the downward force on a roller 45. For a pump rotating in anti-clockwise direction inlet and outlet ports 40, 39 are connected to passages 42, 41 respectively. To give no delivery from the pump, the cross-head 28 is moved to the left in Fig. 1 so that the rotor 32 and segments 26, 27 become concentric. Another chamber 66 contains fluid to the level 61 and some of this may pass into the working chambers through one of the non-return valves 64. Vanes 35, preferably of self-lubricating material, slide in slots 36, the undersides of the slots being vented through bores 38. The segmental ports 26, 27 are narrowed in the vicinities of the ports 39, 40. End ports 16, 17 of the casing may be of light alloy, and two side plates 18, 19 of hardened steel. Bolts 31 pass through ports 16, 17 and plates 18, 19 and also through clearance holes 31a. The rotor shaft 33 rotates in anti-friction bearings 34, and has end seals 67. The inner end radii of the ports 26, 27 are equal to the radius of the rotor so that when the ports are closest together effective sealing is provided. A sealing plate or cover 59 moves with the lever 50 when the latter is rocked over. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 10 (not shown), the stator comprises one rigid element and the balance pistons 23, 24 may be dispensed with. Curved vanes or rollers may be used instead of the straight vanes.
