Abstract

Sodium and/or potassium peroxides are produced by reacting a molten potassium compound with sodium to produce a mixture of sodium, potassium and a sodium salt slag, fractionating the mixture to produce pure sodium and potassium, and oxidizing at least one of the pure metals to the corresponding peroxide. Where one metal is oxidized the other may be recovered in pure form, which in the case of sodium may be recycled to treat a further amount of the potassium compound. The molten potassium compound, e.g. potassium chloride, may either be reacted with sodium vapour and the resulting mixed vapours fractionated, or the molten potassium compound may be reacted with metallic sodium and the metals distilled from the sodium salt slag to form a sodium-potassium alloy prior to fractionation and oxidation. In one embodiment molten potassium chloride is passed into a column (containing packing, e.g. Raschig rings) intermediate its length, sodium vapour passed into the column at a point below that of entry of the chloride, and heat supplied to the column to cause reaction between the components and to produce by fractionation pure potassium vapour at the upper end of the column and sodium chloride which is withdrawn from the lower end, the potassium thus recovered is then oxidized to peroxide. Specification 626,644 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the production of oxides of sodium and potassium. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
