Abstract

Metallic titanium is produced by reacting titanium tetrachloride with a mixture of sodium and potassium in an inert atmosphere and isolating the metallic titanium from the reaction product. The reducing metals are preferably used wholly or in part as a sodium-potassium alloy and should be present in such proportions that the corresponding mixture of their chlorides is a eutectic mixture. The reaction may be carried out below 800 DEG C.
