Abstract

The heat produced by the reaction of aluminium or similarly acting elements with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal peroxides is used to melt metals or alloys. The said metals or alloys are mixed with the exothermic mixture before starting the reaction or a crucible containing the metal or metals is brought into contact with the reacting components in a larger crucible. The reaction may be carried out according to the equation 3BaO2+4Al=2Al2O3+3Ba+ y Calories in which case barium alloys may be formed. The production of a tungsten-barium alloy containing 0.48 per cent of barium is referred to.
