[Class 44] [Also in Group XXXIV] A sliding clasp fastener adapted to seal an opening has overlapping sealing strips along each edge, a slider serving to bring the strips into overlapping position on closing as well as causing interengagement of the fastener elements, and a closure for the end of the opening comprising a cap or housing adapted to be secured to and cover the slider and having tapering marginal edges of elastic material which are brought into contact with a sealing surface. The arrangement includes a slide fastener 15, Fig. 2, and an enclosure structure 16 at one end thereof, applied to an opening in a wall 17 of fabric, &c. The stringers of the fastener are attached e.g., by adhesive, and sealing strips 24, 25 including lateral tapered portions 26, 27 are mounted on the meeting edges of the stringers over the fastener elements. At the end not shown, the contacting faces of strips 24, 25 are attached together by adhesive, and a strip of material superposed at the other end, where the slider rests when the opening is closed, sealing is effected by the cap or housing 16 detachably connected with the slider. This cap engages the surface of a platform 37, which is less flexible than the structure as a whole. Platform 37 is integral or continuous with sealing strips 24, 25, which are cut away at the end to leave an opening 40, and stiffening means such as steel wires 51 may be incorporated. The cap or housing 16, Fig. 3, is of moulded rubber or the like, of generally elliptical form, the side walls being outwardly splayed and tapered, and has a stiffening plate 60 moulded or secured therein. It is retained in position by means of a snap fastening the socket part of which is mounted on plate 60 while the stud forms part of the slider. A pull-ring 73 is mounted on the cap, and a link 74 connects the plate 60 with a slot in the slider. The latter includes a top plate 79, and a flanged bottom plate 80, united by a post 81, and the projecting top part 75 extends from the post 81 forwardly and spaced from top plate 79 so as to afford passage for sealing strips 24, 25. The leading edge of the post between plate 79 and part 75 is tapered and slightly off-set from the centre line to facilitate the opening and spreading action on the sealing strips.
