Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. PEoKEs, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the borough of Dormont, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered new, useful, and Improved Waterproof Containers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a new and improved water tight container for cigarettes, confections, chewing gum and the like.
The object which I have in view is the provision of a water tight container for such and similar purposes which may be carried by bathers when they are in the water without danger of the contents of the container becoming wet or damp. Thus I prefer to provide the back of my container with a loop through which the belt of the bathing suit may be passed to attach the container to the waist of the bather.
Generally speaking my improved container comprises a box of suitable material such for instance, as rust proof metal, or metal coated with rust pro-of material, one end of which is provided with an elliptical access opening to which is applied a removable lid of proper contour to fit the opening. I interpose between the lid and the top of the box about the opening a compressible gasket. The lid is provided centrally with a swivel shaft, the outer end of which is pro vided with a knob adapted to be grasped by the fingers, and the inner end of which is provided with a transversely disposedwedging member rigid with the knob, and when the lid is in place, adapted to be turned into wedging engagement with a pair of cam surfaces on the'inside of the box and at opposite sides of the shorter diameter of the access opening. To insure a completely water tight joint/between the lid and the box, I prefer to define the access opening in the box by a continuous outwardly extending flange against which the gasket is pressed when the lid is wedged in place.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective of a cigarette box embodying the principles of my invention, the lid being shown in place; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same with the lid removed; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken at right angles to Fig. 2, showing the lid in place; Fig. i is an enlarged detail on the same section as Fig. 2 but showing the lid in place and also showing the wedging member turned into its inoperative position, and Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the lid, the wedging member being turned into the position it assumes when operative.
The following is a detailed description of the drawings.
A represents a metal container, which may be made of suitable material such, for instance, as rust proof metal or of metal coated with a rust proof substance. The rear of the container is provided with a metal loop 1 through which a belt may be passed to attach the container to the waist of a bather.
One end of the container, the upper end as shown, is provided with an access opening 2, which opening is preferably not circular but oblong. The opening is defined by the outwardly extending continuous edge flange 3. The inner wall of the container at either side of the shorter diameter of the opening 2 is provided with a tapered or cam flange 4, the taper of one flange being in the opposite direction to the taper of the other flange.
The lid B is a metal plate, preferably rigid, and of proper contour and size to overlap the edge 'fiange 3 of the access opening 2. 5 is a gasket ofcompressible material secured in any convenient manner to the inner side of the lid B, as for instance by means of water proof cement, and adapted to be compressed between the flange 3 and the lid B to insure a water tight joint.
6 is a shaft extending through a coaxial opening in the lid B, and rotatable in relation to said lid. The outer end of said shaft has rigidly attached thereto or made integral therewith the flattened finger knob 7 The inner end of said shaft is squared or angular to fit in a central socket 8 in the wedge member 9, the member 9 being held on the inner end of the shaft 6 as by a set screw 10 extending through a hole in the member 9 and screwed into a threaded axial hole in the inner end of the shaft 6. The head of the screw is contained in a countersinking in the member 9. The member 9 is of proper length that when it is turned parallel with the longer axis ,of the lid the lid may be freely removed from or placed on the box, but when the lid is in place on the box, the knob 7 is turned ninety degrees so that the opposite end portions of l till) lltld iitlti i the wedge member 9 will move into engagement with the ta red flanges 4 and thus wedge the lid tight y down on the flange 3, the gasket being compressed between the flange and the lid.
The screw 10 also serves to tighten a gasket 10 between the knob 7 and the lid B, thus preventing the passage of moisture alon the shaft 6 through the lid.
W ien it is desired to remove the lid the knob 7 isturned ninety degrees to swing the wedge member 9 out of engagement with the flanges 4 and into paral-lellsm with the longer axis of the lid. The lid can then be lifted from place.
I prefer to corrugate the lower surface of the member 9 as at llso it may be used to scratch matches on. L
In Fig. 2 I have shown the container loaded with cigarettes 12 and matches 13. When it is desired to remove the cigarettes or matches the lid is taken off and the box inverted and shaken until "a cigarette or match drops out. The lid may then be replaced and the container is again made water tight.
It is evident from the foregoing that the device is a very convenient'novelty for use with bathers, as the contents cannot become dampened, and the container may be quickly loaded with a supply of contents, and the same may be removed therefrom without difficulty.
\Vhat I desire to claim is 1. A water proof and water tight container for the purposes described, provided with an access opening having one axis reater than the other, an outwardly extendmg perimetral flange defining said opening, opposed cam flanges on the interlor of said container and disposed at either side of the shorter axis of said opening, a lid to fit down over said opening, a compressible gasket interposed between said lid and said flange, a shaft journaled in a hole in the center of said lid, a finger knobfixed on the outer end of said shaft, and a transversely disposed Wedge member fixed on the inner endof said shaft, said member being of proper length that when turned parallel with the longer axis of the lid it will pass freely through said opening as the lid is removed or put in place, but when the lid is Y in place and the wedging member is turned parallel to the shorter axis of the lid said member will move into engagement with ing, a lid to fit down over said opening, a
compressible asket interposed between said lid and said a-nge, a shaft journaled in a hole in the center of said lid, a finger knob fixed on the outer end of said shaft, and a transversely disposed wedge member fixed on the inner end of said shaft, said member being of proper length that when turned parallel with the longer axis of the lid it will pass freely through said opening as the lid is removed or put in place, but when the lid is in place and the wedging member is turned parallel to the shortera-xis of the lid said member will move into engagement with said cam flanges, thus wedging the lid tightly on the container.
3. A water proof and water tight container for the purposes described, provided with an access opening having one axis greater than the other, the edge of said opening being defined by an outwardly extending perimetral flange, opposed cam flanges on the interior of said container and disposed at either side of the shorter axis of said opening, a lid to fit down over said opening, a compressible gasket interposed between said lid and said container, a shaft journaled in a hole in the center of said lid, a finger knob fixed on the outer end of said shaft, and a transversely disposed Wedge member fixed on the inner end of said shaft, said member being of proper length that when turned parallel with the longer axis of the lid it will pass freely through said opening as the lid is removed or put in place, but when the lid is in place and the wedging member is turned arallel to the shorter axis of the lid said member will move into engagement with said cam flanges, thus wedg- -ing the lid tightly on the container, the under surface of said wedging member being serrated to provide a match striking surface.
