Abstract

616,830. Flexible couplings. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and BOWEN, A. May 20, 1946, No. 15212. [Class 80 (ii)] A flexible coupling comprises an element 14 made from a material having both elastic and damping properties, the element, which is secured to at least one of the members, being formed with two curvatures one of which increases and the other decreases upon relative movement of the driving and driven members 1, 2 respectively. The turntable 2 of a gramophone is freely rotatable on an anti-friction bearing 10 mounted on a boss 11 secured to the driving shaft 1, the turntable having rigid therewith a sleeve 13. Drive from the boss 11 to the sleeve 13 is transmitted by doubly curved elements 14 which may be manufactured from polyvinyl halide tube, the ele-. ments being arranged such that relative rotation between the turntable and the spindle causes an increase in the curvature of the portion adjacent the boss 11. Curved metal members 18 are provided to protect the elements 14 when excessive rotation occurs. In a further embodiment the driving spindle has a boss with eccentric surfaces engaging two flattened tubes of the material specified above, the tubes being in contact or fixed to a cylindrical outer sleeve attached to the driven turntable.
