Abstract

A resilient coupling comprises an inner shaft (12) nested concentrically within an outer shaft (11) by means of interposed annular sleeve members (14, 15) of elastomeric material, and also as a parallel path for transmission of torque between the shafts there is provided a buffer unit (16) mounted within the outer shaft. Initial application of torque between the shafts is transmitted solely by sleeve members (14, 15), but when a certain degree of torsional deflection is exceeded by the sleeve unit, torque then becomes additionally transmitted by the buffer unit (16), which may consist of an elastomer-covered star- shaped inner member (Fig. 3) disposed, with lost-motion clearance, within recesses of an outer member (24). The coupling may be incorporated in a cardan shaft assembly. Alternatively, as a non- rotating mounting, the coupling may form part of a vehicle suspension system. <IMAGE>
