Abstract
972,890. Universal joints. R. JORN. Dec. 7, 1962 [Dec. 8, 1961; Oct. 6, 1962], No. 46360/62. Heading F2U. A universal joint between driving and driven shafts 1, 2 comprises rubber annuli 6, 7 bonded between inner, outer and intermediate coned metal rings 3, 4, 5 which during connection to the driving and driven shafts are moved axially relative to each other to pre-stress the rubber annuli, and the outer rubber annulus 6 has a smaller axial length than the inner annulus 7. As shown, two sets of rubber annuli and coned metal rings are arranged in parallel, the coned rings of one set being oppositely directed to the coned rings of the other set. The rubber annuli may have a trapezium or parallelogram shaped cross-section. The coned metal rings 3, 4, 5 may, as shown, be parallel or may, Fig. 4 (not shown), converge towards a common vertex on the joint axis, or may, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) have an intermediate ring with a frustoconical cross-section and oppositely directed inner and outer rings. In Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) a disc arranged between the two sets of elements and fast with the inner metal rings has radial projections which engage with lost motion recesses in a ring fast with the outer coned metal rings to limit relative rotation between the driving and driven shafts.
