Abstract

615,449. Domestic fireplaces. MUMBY, W. H., and WINGET, Ltd. Dec. 17, 1945, No. 34163. [Class 126] [Also in Group XIII] An open-type domestic fire is provided with a ported air-supply cylinder 11 which is fitted with a rotary valve operable by a linkage-system from the front of the fireplace so as to direct air either through ports 10 to the grate 1 or, through ports 12, up behind the boiler 4, round the flue 6, and out through vents into the room, or in both directions simultaneously. The valve is so constructed that it may be set to a position in which it closes both ports 10, 12 but leaves a third port 13 open for the discharge of dust. The fireplace is provided with a vertically slidable shutter 7 housed, in its inoperative position, behind the front 8, and with an ashpan 14 which can be removed for emptying through a pit 15 closed by a plate 17 which can be utilized as a trivet as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows a construction in which the air, heated by passage around the flue 6, passes according to the setting of a damper 32, either into the same room or to a flue B leading to the room above, there being provided below the mantle-shelf 30 a reflector 31 which, when the damper 32 is in the full line position and the shutter 7 lowered, reflects heat from the enclosed fire into the room.
