Class 64(iii) In a portable air heater, e.g. of welded sheet metal, for positioning within a domestic firebox 10 to seal the entrance thereof, a firebox 16 with a smoke outlet 35 to the fireplace flue 11, Fig. 3, is spaced from an enclosing casing providing connected air heating passages 67 to which air flows in beneath the firebox to pass back to the room through an outlet above. Further, a smoke chamber 40, formed on the back wall 29 of the casing, is closed by a detachable bottom wall 42 but opens at the top to the flue 11. Furthermore, smoke from the outlet 35, when a pivoted damper 48 is in the position shown in Fig. 3, passes down ' through the smoke chamber between two partition walls 44 and out to the flue 11 up two outer passages 47, Fig 4, which in a modification, Fig. 4a (not shown), extend round the outside of the side air passages 67. For increased draught when lighting, a rod 50 is used to push the damper 48 into the position shown faintly in Fig. 3 to permit smoke to byepass the chamber 40 to the flue. The side walls 21, Fig. 4, of the firebox slope inwards from the bottom to the top so that air entering the casing past fixed louvres 31, Fig. 3, passes into side passages 67 which increase in size upwardly. The air then flows into the top passage between an inclined top wall 20 of the firebox and a top wall 28 of the casing, which passage thus also increases in size in the direction of the heated air flow to the fixed outlet louvres 32. Flanges 56, 60 formed on the sides and top of the front of the air heater are sealed against the edges of the fireplace with rock wool 69. Ashes from a grate 71 discharge through a tube 55 normally covered by a plate at the bottom of the firebox 16. An air blower may be installed in the air intake opening.
