[Class 126] [Also in Group XIII] A fireplace comprises the combination of a construction made in part from sheet material adapted to form a combustion chamber which is open at one side, and an air-heating chamber, a heat exchanger situated in the air-heating chamber between the combustion chamber and an outlet flue for the combustion products, and adjustable combustion-regulating means adapted to enclose the open side of the combustion chamber. In the form shown, a combustion chamber comprising cast iron or sheet metal panels 8, 9 and an outer shell formed from panels 25, 27. of tile and mortar on a sheet metal backing are built up on a hearth 5, also of tile and mortar on a sheet metal backing and with a bottom layer of asbestos or similar material enabling the hearth to be supported directly on the floor or the joists as desired. The space between the outer shell and the combustion chamber forms an air-heating chamber in which is located a heat exchanger comprising tubes 15 connected to headers 12, 14. The products of combustion from the fire flow through the heat exchanger, the header 14 leading to the outer flue. In one arrangement, air enters through the lower grilles 26, 30, 31, in the panels 25, 27 and flows upwardly before being discharged through similar grilles at the tops of the panels. Alternatively the air may be induced by a fan 45 through the top grilles and discharged through the lower grilles. In the former arrangement, the dampers 51 are turned to the positions shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, both dampers being simultaneously controlled from a central control rod 48 operated from the front of the outer casing. The flow of combustion air to the fire chamber is controlled by means of a front closure, slidable vertically in guides 39 (Fig. 6) and comprising a plurality of glass louvres 40 mounted on a frame and each rotatable about its horizontal axis to a " closed " or " open " position. The louvres are arranged in three sets, all the louvres in one set opening or closing simultaneously by means of links. When in the closed position, edges of adjacent louvres are spaced slightly apart to allow air to pass over the inner surfaces of the louvres to prevent the formation of soot thereon. In a further form (Fig. 7, not shown) the closure is removable bodily from the fireplace.
