Abstract
613,852. Rotary valves. DEHN, S. G. (Parker Appliance Co.). Dec. 27, 1945, No. 34967. [Class 135] In a rotary plug valve the plug has a rectangular recess 28 for a sealing element comprising a slidable rectangular block '29 with a curved face 30 to engage the plug bore 9 and a recess 31 to accommodate an axially slidable disc 34. The block 29 and the disc 34 may be pressed apart by a spring 36 accommodated in a pressure chamber 32 formed by recesses in the block and the disc. An aperture 33 is formed in the block 29 and an aperture 39 may connect the back of the disc with the passage 11 which is off-set from the axis of the plug. In the closed position of the valve, if the curved face 30 is exposed to the pressure side thereof, pressure fluid entering by the aperture 33 acts on the base of the recess 31 to keep the valve sealed. The recess 31 is slightly greater in depth than the disc 34. If, however, pressure fluid enters by the other side of the valve, it leaks round the curved surface of the plug or enters by the aperture 39, if provided, into the back of the recess 28 and acts on the full area of the block 29 and the disc 34 to seal the valve. A sealing ring 38 is provided in a groove in the disc 34 and similar sealing rings 15, 26 are provided to seal the lower end of the plug and its stem 21 respectively. The plug rotates against end bearing rings 19, 20 and bushings 17, 22 are provided for a trunnion pin 18 and the stem 21 respectively. Specification 589,849 is referred to.
