Abstract

873,136. Valves. DEWRANCE & CO. Ltd. Nov. 14, 1958 [Sept. 2, 1957], No. 27527/57. Class 135. A butterfly valve consisting of a disc 2 mounted on a spindle 4 coacts with a seating 12 on a ring 10 which can be moved axially into or away from engagement with the disc 2. The ring 10 is slidable on a tubular part 18 at the inlet of the valve and has welded to it a pair of bellows 22, 40 which are welded at their other ends to the inlet fitting, the chamber 80 enclosed by the bellows being connected through a passage 78 to a valve (not shown) whereby the chamber may be connected to a source of pressure or exhausted to cause the seating ring 10 to be moved relative to the valve disc 2 when the latter is in its closed position. The seating 12 and a corresponding surface 6 on the valve disc are formed of a hard facing material and of conical, spherical or flat formation. A tubular member 85 slightly larger in diameter than the disc 2 is mounted on a member 50 and tends to preserve the stream line nature of the flow when the valve is opened. The rotation of the spindle 4 is limited to a right-angle by co-operation of a quadrant-shaped portion 89 of a fixed plug 87 with a projection 81 at the end of the spindle. The valve housing is fabricated from parts that are welded together to provide fluid-tight joints. In a modification, a seating ring 10 with its associated bellows is arranged on each side of the valve disc and the space between the two seating rings is provided with a connection whereby it may be connected to a fluid-pressure source, an exhausting pump and atmosphere so that when the valve is closed the space may be exhausted to enhance the seal provided between the seating rings and the disc, or may be pressurized to facilitate opening of the valve.
