Abstract

722,922. Gate valves. GARROTT, J. C. March 27, 1952 [April 10, 1951], No. 7897/52. Class 135. A gate valve comprises a tongue-shaped gate member 12, Figs. 1, 3, 5, formed on a screwthreaded operating spindle 50 which on rotation of a nut member 53 opens and closes the valve. The gate is formed with recesses 41 housing an annular resilient washer 26 which when the valve is closed sealing engages a U-shaped resilient gasket 25 clamped between a base-plate 28 and a bonnet 32. Metal wearing pads 44 are inserted in recesses 42 in the gasket 25 to provide a metal-to-metal joint with the parallel faces 17 formed on the valve casing 10. To prevent leakage from the valve casing annular sealing rings 60 are mounted in recesses 31 formed on coned projections of the base-plate and bonnet. If desired, the coned projections may be screw-threaded and engage complementary threads in the casing whereby the recesses 31 and rings 60 are dispensed with. In a modification. Fig. 7, the base-plate 28 is formed integral with the valve casing 10 and removable members 21 are held in position by dowels 65 inserted in the casing 10.
