Abstract

Plasticizing agents for polymers such as polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloride-acetate and polyvinyl acetate include: acetyl triethyl citrate, methyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, ethyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, butyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, glycerol triacetate, dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate, sucrose octa-acetate, dimethoxy ethyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, diphenyl mono-o-xenyl phosphate, methyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, di-o-xenyl mono-phenyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, cotton-seed oil, mineral oil, diethyl hexyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate and sulphonated castor oil. In addition may be added conditioning materials, stabilisers, e.g. basic lead acetate or carbonate, lubricants such as stearic acid, zinc stearates and various oleates, and fillers such as carbon black or calcium carbonate. A method of applying and mixing the plasticizing and conditioning materials is described (see Group II). Specification 609,329, [Group II], is referred to.ALSO:Moulding material in particle form capable of being transformed into a cohesive solid product by the application of heat and pressure is prepared by tumbling a mass of base material in substantially dry particle form to bring different particles to the surface of the mass, and applying a conditioning material in fluid form to the surface of the mass at a rate so limited that the mass is tumbled a multiplicity of times to change the surface layer of the mass a multiplicity of times and to maintain the mass in its substantially dry particle form during the period of such application in order to produce substantially uniform distribution of the added fluid throughout the substantially dry mass without any appreciable agglomeration of said particles. The operation may be performed in apparatus as described in Specification 609,329.
