Abstract

Compositions suitable for the production of thermoplastic moulded products are made by distributing a pulverulent polyvinyl compound and a liquid plasticizer therefor which gels the polyvinyl compound on heating throughout a flock of fibrous material and heating the resultant fibrous mass sufficiently to anchor the pulverulent polyvinyl compound to the fibres of the material without effecting coalescence of the particles of the polyvinyl compound and plasticizer to a homogeneous mass. The amount of plasticizer is preferably sufficient to form a film of plasticizer on the flock. The polyvinyl compound may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate and/or vinylidene chloride in which the vinyl chloride units predominate and the plasticizer may be dibutyl, di-hexyl or di-octyl phthalate or tricresyl or trichlorphenyl phosphate. The flock may be of wool, cotton, asbestos, glass wool, slag wool or regenerated cellulose. A pulverulent filler, such as limestone, or a pigment or both may be distributed throughout the flock of fibrous material before the heating step and there may also be incorporated a non-gelling plasticizer which may be a petroleum hydrocarbon. The fibrous mass may be used for making sheet material suitable for flooring by feeding it to a calender, and marbled products may be made by simultaneously supplying to the calender differently coloured fibrous masses.
