Abstract

605,553. Variable-speed gearing. MACGREGOR, D. Dec. 31, 1945, No. 35220. [Class 80 (ii)] In a variable-speed gear, driving and driven conical drums a, b are disposed alternately round a common axis and are connected by a belt, chain or rings passing round the drums. The larger end of one drum is adjacent to the smaller ends of adjacent drums. In the case of a belt or chain, the member is tensioned by adjustable pulleys k housed in an annular ring m which can be moved axially along the drums by means of the screws n in order to change the gear ratio. The driving drums a are connected to the driving shaft by gearwheels f, g and the driven drums b are connected to the driven shaft i by a similar arrangement of gear-wheels. Each set of conical drums may comprise two or more elements.
