[Class 74(ii)] To produce on a circular independent needle knitting machine, more nearly perfect stitches in one section of a split-fabric (e.g. the instep portion of a split foot) knitting is carried out simultaneously on two groups of needles with individual yarns, one yarn being drawn over the backs of sinkers, then radially motionless, the parts of the backs of the sinker over which that yarn is drawn all having the same height; and the other yarn is drawn in the throats of sinkers. In knitting a foot, the appropriate one of side sinker cams 11, 12, at the auxiliary side of the machine, advances at each stroke (by means of an additional point 16 or 27) the sinkers 17 associated with the instep needles, sooner and further than usual, so that a yarn 15 (which has also taken part in the formation of the leg) is drawn and measured over the sinker backs. Casting off occurs at points 161 or 27<1>, whilst the newly laid yarn is still on the sinker backs; and the sinkers are subsequently retracted by the centre cam 9 or 13, to transfer the newly formed sinker loops over the tops of the nibs to the throats. The side sinker cams 7, 8, at the main side of the machine have no additional points and the yarn 14 for the high splice, heel, sole and toe is drawn in the sinker throats. The rotary knit leg may be of the one yarn 15, but an additional, identical yarn may be fed either at the auxiliary or at main side of the machine and knitted in simultaneously. The yarn or yarns are drawn over the sinker backs and, when the second yarn is fed at the main side, a flopper cam 23, having a point 24 corresponding to the point 16, is swung in to move the sinkers in sooner and further than they would be moved by the cam 8.
