Abstract

760,109. Knitting. BENTLEY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. April 7, 1953 [April 5, 1952], No. 9317/53. Class 74 (2). Part of the coursewise extent of seamless circularly knitted fabric (e.g. the sole S and, if desired, the high splice of a sock) is of double layer fabric, namely fabric 11 (outer fabric) of successive courses of one-yam y of, say, wool and fabric 12 (inner fabric) of successive courses of another yarn z of say, cotton, the two yarns being interknitted along each side of the double layer portion, in at least one wale of a single layer portion which is knitted from at least one of the yarns and constitutes another part of the coursewise extent of the fabric. Over the double fabric areas the yarn y is knitted as outwardly facing stitches on alternate needles in alternate courses and yarn z is knitted as inwardly facing stitches on the intervening needles in the intervening courses. In the leg L and instep I, both yarns may be knitted, to form plain two-feed fabric, Figs. 1 and 3, or two-feed rib or links-links fabric, Figs. 2 and 4, the yarns being selectively floated at selected stitches, or groups of stitches, to produce two colour designs. Alternatively, Fig. 5, the leg and instep may be of single-feed fabric of yarn y, the yarn z being knitted into one or more junction wales such as 4, 5, at each side of the sole; one or more intermediate junction wales may be provided, e.g. down the centre of the sole. The yarn z is either cut-off in each course, or is floated across the instep, the floats being subsequently trimmed out. The double sole may be narrower than, of the same width as, or wider than the heel, extending on each side beyond the point P thereof. The double fabric area may be widened or narrowed as desired. The top R may be of rib fabric, or of rib and plain fabric containing elastic threads. Heel H and toe T are knitted by reciprocation with progressive narrowing and widening to form gores G. The fabric may be produced on a twofeed superposed cylinder machine having double ended needles and links-links patterning mechanism. There are described arrangements of sliding and cams such that, on the instep side, all needles are in the lower cylinder and knit at both feeds whilst, on the sole side, alternate needles are transferred to the upper cylinder and knit only at the second feed, the intervening needles remaining in the lower cylinders and knitting only at the first feed. The stitch lengths of top and bottom cylinder needles on the sole side are so controlled that the sole fabrics balance the instep fabrics on one another.
