[Class 74 (ii).] Relates to means for preventing the formation of an eyelet or eyelets in the knitting of split work hosiery as, e.g. when commencing the formation of the ring toe 11. The invention is described in connection with the machine of Specification 375,379, in which the leg portion is knitted at the side of the machine corresponding to the auxiliary knitting cams so that the leg and instep may be knitted of the same yarn. The cam 105 is inserted to engage only the long butted jacks 33 in the course preceding the formation of the ring toe, so that the corresponding needles engage yarn at the feeder corresponding to the auxiliary cams 17<1>, but are not raised high enough for the old loops to drop off their latches. Thereafter and during rotation in the same direction to form the first course of the circular knitted ring toe, the needles knit at the regular set of knitting cams 16<1>. The three needles by drawing yarn at the auxiliary set of cams draw or tighten the stitch at the first instep needle and so prevent a long stitch or eyelet at the point 142. The cam 105 is brought into operation in the same manner when, after the welt 1 or rib-top has been knitted at the regular set of knitting cams, the yarn is changed for knitting the leg 2 at the auxiliary cams.
