Abstract

600,842. Transformers; inductances. MULLER, H. July 4, 1945, No. 17017. [Class 38 (ii)] A single phase transformer, choke or the like, is provided with a number of positivelyspaced parallel flux paths a<SP>1</SP> disposed transversely relative to a common flux generating core a, the cross-section of each path a' being less than half the cross-section of the core a, so that an inner path a<SP>1</SP> will approach saturation before the core and magnetic flux will cross the intervening air gap or gaps to one or more of the outer paths a<SP>1</SP>. The air gaps may be produced by solid inserts of insulating material e located at one or both ends of the core a and, as shown, the transformer or choke may be formed of magnetic strip metal, the turns of which provide the parallel paths a<SP>1</SP>. Parts of the outer limbs may be arranged to 'carry additional windings g, h, whereby the saturation of those parts may be influenced separately. The strip assembly may consist of interleaved, oppositely directed, U-shaped portions, as shown, or a continuous strip, around a core consisting of a bundle of flat strips. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), a choke core consists of an assembly of E-shaped laminations across the ends of which flat laminations are located transversely with their surfaces facing the ends of the limbs, with insulating non-magnetic inserts between the transverse laminations and a similar insert between the centre limb and the adjacent transverse lamination.
