Abstract

599,459. Vehicle underframes. ALLEY, S. E., and ALLEY TRAILERS, Ltd. Sept. 17, 1945, No. 23994. [Class 108 (ii)] A vehicle underframe comprises metal crossmembers 14 of angle, H, T, or channel crosssection secured by welding to a metal longitudinal member 12, 13 which is built up to a tubular cross-section by welding together the edges of the sides of two channels or angle bars, each cross-member 14 being notched at its under part only to fit on and around the upper part of the cross-section of the longitudinal member so as to be carried thereby in the form of two cantilevers. The ends of the cross bars are connected together at each side by a tie bar 16 in the form of a flat strip set edge wise and welded to the cross-members. When the longitudinal member is built up of two channels, these may be welded together along the neutral axis of the member, and the faces of the box member are set so as to be vertical and horizontal. The cross-members 14 are always arranged with a continuous un-notched side, flange or base uppermost, and, when these members are in the form of angles, they are arranged with one flange horizontal and slightly above the upper surface of the longitudinal member. The axle 10 is secured in place by welding pads 18, 19 to the axle and bolting these to angle-brackets 20, 21 welded to the longitudinal member 12, 13 and strips 16 respectively.
