Abstract
659,902. Vehicle bodies. ROMER, A. J., BUSWELL, F. J., and BRISTOL TRAMWAYS & CARRIAGE CO., Ltd. Jan. 28 1949, No. 2486. [Class 108(i)] A double deck passenger road vehicle having a form of transmission gear as described in Specification 638,426, [Group XXXI], and as shown in Fig. 2, and conventional seating accommodation which on both decks is arranged on either side of a central gangway and mostly faces forwardly and rearwardly, comprises a number of cross members 26, 27, 28 and 29, Fig. 6, extending between and laterally beyond the sides of the longitudinal chassis frame members 10 which laterally extending portions 30, 31, 32 and 33, also extend upwardly while other portions of the crossmembers are so shaped that their centre portions lie below the tops of the longitudinals, an H- shaped member secured to the upwardly extending portions of each cross member, an inverted U-shaped member secured to the top of each H-shaped member, longitudinally extending brace members secured to the upright limbs of the various members, and panelling secured to the resulting frame. The longitudinal members 10 are bowed upwardly at 11 at their rear ends and are provided forwardly with upward inflections 13 and extensions 14 between which is mounted the engine 15. The cross members 26, 27, Fig. 3, each comprise an upright web which is slightly bowed downwardly to form the gangway floor, and has top and bottom flanges 34 and 35, and end flanges 36, two such web portions being arranged side by side with their flanges outwardly directed, across which flanges extend plates 37 and 38 to form a box structure. Holes 39, 40, are provided for the driving shafting The extensions 30 have upwardly extending portions 43 and both parts each comprise two plates spaced apart and flanged on their inner edges, across which flanges a plate 44 is welded. A wood-filled channel member 45 is also welded to the uprights. Flanges 46 on the plate 30 are bolted through the webs of the longitudinals to the flanges 36, and the web portions of the members 26 and 30 are strengthened by plates 50 and 49. A metal floor 52 extends across the centre of the member 26. The construction of the downwardly bowed cross members 28, 29 Fig. 4 (not shown), is similar to that of the cross members 26, 27, but the members 28 and extensions 32 are secured to one another and to the members 10 by fish plates 61 extending through slots 62, Fig. 4 (not shown), in the web of the members 10 reinforced by plates 64, Fig. 4 (not shown). The driving shafts 17 extend underneath and on either side of the centre line of the member 28. The H members, Figs. 5 and 7 (not shown), are arranged for attachment to the top of the cross member extensions, and are each formed by two T-shaped members 66 secured together by a member 67 across which extends the upper central gangway. The H members are similarly constructed as already described for the members 26, 27. The roof or U frame members, Fig. 8, each comprise an angle member 78 on each side of the vehicle and a connecting bridging member 79. Bracing rails 86, 87, 88 and 89, of channel formation containing wood fillers extend between the uprights of the frame. The lower cross member of the forward bulkhead frame, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), comprises a girder like structure having an arched upper member 90, lower members 91, 92 and 93, and struts 94, while inclined members 95, 96, secure the lower members of the girder to the chassis frame members 10. Gutted plates 97, 98, tie members 99 and plates 105 support the bulkhead frame. The members 92 and 95 constitute an overhead suspension for the rear end of the engine, as well as members of the girder structure for the bulkhead.
