Abstract

598,683. Concrete blocks. MALTHOUSE, E. G. Oct. 31, 1945, No. 28849. [Class 87(i)] A prefabricated concrete corner unit is formed by casting a concrete slab with a row of cavities extending across it, erecting the slab, when set, at a desired angle to the horizontal, and casting a second slab in such a way that material for the second slab enters the cavities of the first slab to unite the two slabs. A concrete slab 28, Fig. 1, is cast between a toothed member 24 and a stepped member 26 on a template 20 with upstanding ribs in simulation of brickwork. The concrete is poured in the mould after L-shaped reinforcing bars 29 have been laid and a bar 32 has been passed through holes in the toothed member 24. The finished block 28 is removed from the mould after withdrawing the bar 32 and is placed upright against a support 36, Fig. 3, with its toothed end on the template 20 of a mould similar to that shown in Fig. 1. Concrete 40 is introduced to form a slab filling the cavities between the teeth of the slab 28 to which it is keyed by the reinforcement 30 and by a bar 41 previously inserted through the holes in the teeth. In an alternative construction, the first pre-cast slab 46, Fig. 6, is formed with upstanding teeth 47 having protruding reinforcing bars 48 between them. In a further construction the second slab is cast to extend on both sides of the teeth of the first slab to form a T-unit. Alternatively a T-unit may be produced by uniting the second slab through cavities formed in an intermediate part of the first slab; and by uniting an intermediate part of the second slab with an intermediate part of the first slab an X-unit is produced.
