Abstract

594,456. Differential and epicyclic gear. COOPER, C. J. April 1, 1944, No. 6081. [Class 80(ii)] Gear mechanism comprises a rotatable drum 9 having a pair of shafts 1, 2 arranged axially and a pair 8 arranged radially thereof and all interconnected by bevels 5, the radial shafts each carrying an additional bevel 6 meshing a large bevel 10 mounted to rotate concentrically upon and externally of the drum, either or both the axial shafts, the drum or the external bevel 10 being capable of use as driving or driven members. In the simple train, Fig. 1, (not shown), either the drum 9 or the bevel 10 may be held while the other is used as the driven member. In Fig. 3 the external bevel 10 drives a final driven shaft 17 at rightangles to it, and the drum 9 is driven selectively by the axial driving shaft 1 through a three-speed clutched countershaft gear c, d, e, f, g, h. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the drum 9 drives, through bevel and spur gears, an additional driven shaft co-axial with the driven shaft 17, the two driven shafts being thus driven differentially.
