585,431. Bearings. RAILWAY APPLIANCES CO., Ltd. and CULLEN, A. P. Oct. 25, 1944, No. 20732. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] Dust-excluding means for a bearing of a reciprocable rod or shaft comprises a washer 5 of soft material such as felt or soft rubber which fits snugly around the shaft or rod 1 and has bonded to it on each of its faces a rigid supporting washer 6 which surrounds the shaft or rod with a small clearance such dust-excluding means being mounted so as to be retained in position around the shaft and capable of movement therewith in any direction transverse to the axis of the shaft. Oil-resisting cement is used for the bonding. Means for compressing the felt may be provided. The dust-excluding means may be carried by a flexible sleeve or gaiter 7 as of leather fixed to and extending from the bearing housing 3 thus permitting transverse movement of the shaft the bearing 2 for which may be self-aligning. The composite washer may comprise a plurality of soft washers with intervening rigid support washers. Fig. 3 shows a rotary and reciprocable shaft 11 of square section supported by a self-aligning member within the inner surface 9 of a ball bearing ; the housing 33 of this bearing has side pockets of such size as to allow the dust-excluding means inserted therein, generally denoted by 56 and comprising felt and rigid washer rings as described above, to move transversely with any transverse movement of the shaft arising from the self-aligning mounting thereof.
