Abstract
727,597. Ball-and-socket joints. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd. July 9, 1953 [July 10, 1952], No. 17443/52. Class 65(2). In a ball-and-socket joint comprising a cylindrical housing 10 in which are seated two bearing members 17 having part-cylindrical outer surfaces conforming to the inner surface of the housing and partspherical inner surfaces supporting the ball 15, the inner surfaces being so arranged with respect to the outer surfaces that the bearing members are wedge-shaped in a cross-sectional plane perpendicular to the axis of the housing, a wedge-shaped element 26, guided for radial movement in the housing and urged inwardly by resilient means 27, is interposed between the thicker ends of the bearing members for exerting a thrust tending to separate the said ends of the bearing members. The angle of the wedge is such that the latter is immovable by thrust exerted thereon by the bearing members. A lubricator 28 is provided in the housing in such a position that lubricant enters the space between the thinner ends of the bearing members. Specification 278,345, [Class 65(ii)], is referred to.
