Abstract
792,197. Stuffing-box substitutes. MONO PUMPS, Ltd. April 9, 1956 [April 7, 1955], No. 10343/55. Class 122(5). [Also in Group XXIV]. A rotatable spindle 1 which also has either orbital or radial reciprocating motion is sealed where it passes through an opening 2 in a wall 3 by a gland comprising a bearing device which is prevented from rotating while permitted to take part in the orbital or radial reciprocating motion of the spindle, flexible means 24 between the bearing device and wall 3 completely surrounding the spindle where it passes through the opening 2 and sealing means on the bearing device acting against a radial surface thereof to prevent ingress of material or fluid from within the flexible means. The flexible means 24 consists of a bellows secured at one end to a carrier 17 and the bearing device comprises a bush 16 which is disposed within the carrier 17 and mounted on a flanged sleeve 14 fitted over the outward extension of the spindle 1, the sleeve being located between a shoulder 15 on the spindle and a flanged ring 13 secured to the spindle end. Felt washers 22 seal the bearing from fluid or grit within the bellows, the bellows carrier 17 being pressed into engagement with the seal 22 by a coil spring 19. The spindle 1 is driven by a shaft 5, the joint between these members being provided by securing the end of the shaft within the recessed end of the spindle by a wrist pin 6 passing through a sleeve 7 in the drive-shaft. Grease is retained around the joint by a rubber sealing element 11 mounted between a rib 12 formed on the shaft 5 and the recessed portion of the spindle 1. Rotary movement of the bellows carrier 17 is prevented by a radius rod screwed radially into it, the outer end of the radius rod being connected by link members 30, 32 to the frame. The bush 16 may be of sintered bronze, oil-impregnated.
