Abstract

575,086. Upsetting and stretching machines. ENGINEERING & RESEARCH CORPORATION. Feb. 28, 1944, No. 3632 Convention date, Oct. 28, 1943. [Class 83 (iv)] In a machine for upsetting sheet metal having two pairs 2, 4 of pivoted jaws and means for closing the jaws on the work, the upper jaws each hang from a pivot 6 freely and have a convex working face 8 whereof the lowest part is nearer the other jaw 2 than is its pivot 6 and the lower jaws 4 support the work and are each free to move towards and away from the other. The upper jaws 2 are mounted by parallel pivots 6 on a head 5 which can be rapidly reciprocated by a crank 12a. They are pressed apart by an adjustable spring 9 to a position limited by plates 11. The lower jaws 4 may be similarly mounted on a bed 30 which is vertically adjustable by a wedge 34 and screw 36. The gripping pressure causes jaws A to move towards the jaws B. The faces of the lower jaws are similar, but they are flat at the parts the work C rests on. In a modification, the lower jaws, instead of being pivoted, rest on anti-friction rollers 44, Fig. 4, and are pressed apart by a spring 46. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the statement that the invention may also be used for stretching. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
